Principles of Blessing

by Omolola Oriogun

My spiritual father once told me that, ‘If you want to experience and live in GOD’s true blessings, then, obedience to GOD and HIS word is  paramount.’  He made me understand that the first few chapters of the book of Proverbs contain Solomon’s fatherly advice to young people. But when I started reading them I can clearly hear our Heavenly Father’s advice to all of HIS children.

He also said, “I believe that most people want to lead happy and fulfilled lives. We want to receive GOD’s blessings in our lives, but sometimes we do not do our part in this process.  In the first ten verses of Proverbs Chapter 3, GOD provides us with five distinct principles that we can follow to prepare ourselves for receiving HIS blessings.”

Now please don’t misunderstand what I am saying here. In a perfect world, following these five principles would always lead to the blessings defined in this text here and now, but as you know we live in a less-than-perfect world, sometimes sin gets in the way, and sometimes GOD’s blessings are delayed until JESUS returns to call us to eternal life.  Whether in this world or the next, however, we can be sure that following HIS principles will ultimately lead to blessings.   With that in mind, let’s take a look at the five principles:

Obedience:  My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:Prov.3:1 In order to practice obedience to GOD’s Word, we must first know what HIS Word says.  As we read the Bible and learn more about HIM, we can begin to keep HIS commands in our hearts, and can eventually get better and better at obeying HIM.  As a result of taking heed to verse 1, HIS commands will, “prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity”- Prov.3:2. For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

Integrity:  Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart (Prov.3:3).   Relationships important in this life.  Relationships with GOD and with other people are key to our existence.  When you act in love and faithfulness, you build your integrity and positively impact all of your relationships.  When that is done, you can be sure verse 4 of Proverbs 3 will come to pass in your life – So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

Trust:  Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. (Prov.3:5). GOD wants us to lean on HIM in and for everything we do instead of leaning on ourselves.  When you trust GOD with all of your heart, you will learn to lean on HIM in good and bad times. Before you know it, “HE will definitely make your paths straight” (Prov.3:6).

Discernment:  Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil (Prov.3:7). Most of us know the difference between right and wrong. GOD’s Word and the Holy Spirit convict us of sinfulness in our lives and show us the things we should avoid.  As we turn from evil towards GOD, “this will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones” (Prov.3:8).

Giving:  Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase  (Prov.3:9) When we give GOD the “firstfruits of our crops”, we are giving HIM our best in terms of our time, money, and talent.  We honor HIM when we have a generous heart and give GOD the best that we have to offer. By so doing, “your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine” (Prov.3:10).

When we follow GOD’s principles in life, we can prepare ourselves to receive all of HIS blessings.  HE loves us more than we can possibly imagine and HE wants nothing more than to give us joy and fulfillment in this life, but we have to do our part.

Praise HIM for HIS goodness and grace today, and thank HIM for all of your blessings already received, and the ones yet to come.

Many Christians love to quote Philippians 4:19. But they don’t quote it in the context that it was written. The Apostle Paul is giving this promise to a group of believers who were operating in GOD’s principles of “giving and receiving” and “sowing and reaping”. Paul, in Philippians 4:19, is reiterating what Jesus says in Luke 6:38.

Therefore, for us to experience GOD’s divine blessings, we must obey and follow all HIS principles.
